I am thinking of visiting England for a short break in late Sept. Where's good to go? I'm from Inverness

I'm looking for a nice relaxing break. I don't drive so would be looking for somewhere with good transport links. I will be travelling on my own.

Hi Sarah77 - you want a relaxing break and you live in Inverness! I reckon you need somewhere different like the Cotswolds. It takes about 10 hours to get there (Kemble or Moreton-in-Marsh are main stations I think) by train, which is not bad considering how far down the country it is. A train to Manchester will take you about 8 hours!

The Cotswolds will give you the utlimate in relaxing surroundings but is totally different to what you have in Inverness. The Cotswolds has a mellow ambience with its soft landscapes, rivers and meadows, its quaint English villages, lovely little tea shops and gorgeous old pubs.

Hi Sarah77. The Cotswolds and the Lakes are both lovely - but what about somewhere like York and the surrounding areas. A really beautiful area and not quite so far to travel!Dancing

Thanks for the ideas, guys. The Cotswolds sounds a bit too much travel since I don't drive. York sounds good though, esp since I'll only be travelling from Edinburgh that day. Don't you need a car for the Lakes?

Hi Sarah77. If you were thinking of the Lakes there are quite a few options without a car. Have a look at Countrygoer if you arrive by train or coach, there are seems to be quite a good bus network around the Lakes.

Thanks, Katie. I checked out that website, and the Lake snow looks like a good option for me. Actually, I didn't think there'd be such good public transport for such an area.
