Fine for playing street football - Newark and Sherwood District council is clamping down on young people causing "annoyance" to residents. Children in a Nottinghamshire town will be fined £100 for playing football on the street.

Seems a bit harsh to me. Any views?

A few weeks ago on tv I saw that one local police force had set up a group to get kids off the street and enjoy sports. Applause

Rather than fine the kids, shouldn't this council be doing the same.

Well it is in fact illegal to play or watch football, and has been for hundreds of years, so there is no need to impose any fine!

The ideal alternative used to exist - that old bye-law in Hereford which made it legal to shoot Welsh people there with a bow and arrow in the Cathedral Close on a Sunday. I offered to organise competitions, but they wouldn't let me before they repealed the law. However the law still states that if any Welsh person is found within the city walls of Chester before sunrise or after sunset, they are to be decapitated. Maybe the anti-social element could round up Welsh people in that city and march them off to the police station demanding that the law be enforced. It may beextreme, but it would instill respect for the law.

There are some very strange bye-laws aren't there? For example did you know that it is illegal to enter the Houses of Parliament in a suit of armour or that until 1976 cab drivers were required by law to carry a bale of hay to feed a horse?

I wouldn't recommend trying the Chester course of action though. I'm sure case law would have superceded it by now. It was apparently very unpopular with the Cestrians and put in place by the 'oppressive' English king around 1400, who at the time was worried about the people of Chester joining forces with the Welsh against him. Crikey. Kind of makes a £100 fine for playing street football seem tame eh. Silenced

When nine pin bowling was declared illegal in 1485, tenpin bowling was invented to get round the law. So can it be proven that the children are playing football? It is extremely rare for street games to follow all the particulars of FA rules (goalposts the right width, length of playing periods, size and weight of ball, pitch markings etcetera).

The way you stop street nuisance is to make eating out of doors illegal. They would have to go home sometime.

Seems like a bit of a joke to me £100 fine.

Then again if you are left with the repair costs that is sometimes caused by such activities you may think its a good idea.
