I love to travel by train (though preferably not in the morning rush hour!). A favourite trip of mine is along the Arun line following the coast to Chichester. The Arun valley is an amazing sight on a clear day, then on to to Arundel with its great castle views and towards Chichester taking in all the pretty villages along the way - places like Bosham (part of Chichester harbour - an area of outstanding natural beauty). What is your favourite railway journey or is it all just crowded trains with nowhere to sit?

I also enjoy the Arun Valley and have had the pleasure of seeing Arundel Castle coming sweeping into view when travelling South - marvellous! The train from Kings Cross to York also takes in some beautiful scenery and the North York Moors Railway is superb if you like a bit of nostalgia.

...and another for rides behind steam locomotives and preserved diesels is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. You can travel from Pickering to Whitby, a distance of 18 miles. The ride takes you through Goathland village, also known as Aidensfield in YTV’s Heartbeat. It's a very pretty route, but one to beat that is the one from Exeter to Plymouth where it runs along the sea wall. It's amazing on rough days, especially when the waves crash over the coaches. http://www.geograph.org.uk/profile/4330/all

I was recently on the steam train from Tenterden in Kent to Bodiam Castle. This was a great day out that I would recommend to anyone.

I'd love to go on a really nice long scenic train journey.I often look enviously at those magazine adverts every year through the rocky mountains and Canada. Most of mine are quite boring unfortunately. I do like to go through the Totley tunnel from Sheffield though and emerge in the peak district. The Hope valley line is quite nice as long as you get off before Manchester!

A friend of mine has recently returned from a family holiday in Devon and was telling me about The Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway yesterday evening.

Looks wonderful Northy. My father was one of the last train drivers in this country to drive steam trains and the stories he tells us are absolutely brilliant - he even has a list of the top speeds he achieved on some of the old steam trains. Nostalgia is a great thing!

The Chiltern line is a good Railtrack line. It goes through some nice countryside and interesting places, from London Marylebone up to Birmingham. High Wycombe, Princes Risborough, Seer Green and Jordans, Bicester North, Kings' Sutton (of course!) You look out of thewindow the whole way, and can enjoy any place you choose to get off at.
There is also of course the classic Severn Valley Railway, Kidderminster to Bridgnorth. Again, every place on the line is well worth the visit, and the lovely old steam trains and stations done up as in the 1930s are super. Go and visit my mom and grandad in Upper Arley churchyard this way and tell them I sent you.
