Your perfect weekend - Peak District

Chatsworth, Derbyshire

The Peak District has something for everyone. In the northern area you can roam on wild open moorland with magnificent views overlooking sites such as the Derwent Dams. Further south, stroll alongside sparkling rivers in wildlife-rich valleys far from the hustle and bustle of town. The Peak Park Rangers lead regular guided walks specialising in many different interests – from a long hike along the Pennine Way or other long distant trails, to a ghost walk or tour around a village or town.

My idea of a perfect weekend in England would be to wake up really early and go on an all-day hike with friends in the Peak District before heading to a lovely country retreat, where I would spend the evening chatting over a delicious meal and a glass of red wine. The next day, I would enjoy a hearty English breakfast overlooking the lovely, peaceful landscape. I would then spend the rest of the day walking from village to village, perhaps stumbling across a local fête.

My perfect weekend? My husband and I would drive up the M1 to the Peak District for a 10 mile walk from Hathersage up to Stanage Edge. For lunch we'd eat our sandwiches looking out over Derbyshire. After the walk we'd retreat to a cottage nearby and soak in the spa bath to relax our weary legs. Next day we'd spend a relaxing day walking around Matlock, up to the Heights of Abraham then a brisk walk down into town to eat fish and chips with the bikers.

Spending a weekend soaking up the smells and scenery of the Peak District is an idealic weekend away. There is nothing more relaxing than watching hawks catch their prey and sit with a picnic on a hillside. Taking a walk down the valleys and spending time with family and friends in one of the stunning holiday homes that we've had.

There is nothing better at this unusually warm time of year than taking a trip up to Stanage or the Roaches. With the warm sun cutting through the crisp winter air, a day of climbing on the crag couldn't be better. A picnic on the rock face with friends, enjoying the spectacular views out to Ladybower and Hathersage make the scramble all worthwhile. Then what could be better than a stop off at the cosy local for a well earned drink and warm as the cool evening air closes in? Perfect!
