Your perfect weekend - York

A pleasure cruise on the River Ouse, York

York is one of the most intriguing cities in England. A city layered with history, beauty and variety. Superbly preserved, York has witnessed more than 2000 years of vibrant history. Attractions are thick underfoot in York! Highlights include the magnificent York Minster, the world’s biggest and best railway museum and the Castle Museum. Let 21st century technology transport you back to Viking Age York at JORVIK or marvel at William the Conqueror’s Clifford’s Tower and wander through the terrifying York Dungeon.

I would start the weekend having a leisurely stroll around the historic city of York - admiring the buildings, followed by an afternoon enjoying an ice cream on the beach front at nearby Scarborough.

York has much to offer for a short break. The Minster, with the chance of hearing the choir singing. The old city walls to walk around and of course all the lovely shops, not your usual chain stores. A real must is the Yorvik Centre, when I went many years ago I really felt I had been taken back in time, what with the sights and smells, I was sorry when the experience was over. I mustn't forget the great York Museum, another treat for a weekend visitor. What a fantastic city.

My perfect weekend would be staying with my brother in York, visiting the dungeon with all my children and letting them walk the wall, then topping the 1st night with a ghost walk. The attractions are so varied there's something for everyone. The next day's spent finding a car boot, hunting for bargains, then a park and museum and chilling in the company of family who I don't often see but wish I did. My family makes every weekend I spend with them a perfect weekend.

York has something for everyone .there's brilliant shops for mum, plenty of museums for the kids -the railway museum is a great place to keep them entertained for the day -and it's free. The Yorkshire Wheel is next to it ,which is great value for money, and on a clear day you can see for miles. The Dungeons are fantastic if you want to be scared stiff! The Jorvik centre takes you back to the days of the Vikings. York Minster is a lovely tranquil place attracting visitors from all over the world.

My perfect weekend would be in York, Where I can see the historicness of the place and enjoy it's charm and shopping, then enjoy it's food and romance.
Zena Sutherland / Littleborough

Walking down the shambles and whiling away the hours in lovely tea shops finished with a ghost walk!

Go to York for the weekend. It is absolutely superb. The medievil city sparks your imagination into life. I stayed at a superb Guest house called four high petergate (www.fourhighpetergate.co.uk) near the world famous Shambles shopping street. On this street you can see the oldest medievil buildings in Europe.

Late saturday afternon sitting before a real log fire as the snow gently falls on the landscape beyond the pub's leaded window. Then on for a hearty meal with someone who deserves these special moments.
David Wride / Sale

A day spent exploring museums and historic buildings followed by lashings of real ale in a traditional pub. A nice lie in on Sunday, full English breakfast and a leisurely boat trip on the river.
